Quick Guide: Replacing Your Key Fob Battery

How to Replace a Car Key Fob Battery

A dead key fob battery can prevent you from locking, unlocking, or remotely starting your vehicle. Fortunately, replacing the battery is a quick and straightforward process that usually takes only a few minutes with the right tools.

What You’ll Need

  • A small flathead screwdriver or plastic prying tool.
  • The correct replacement battery (commonly a CR2032 or CR2025, depending on your key fob model).
  • A clean, well-lit workspace.

Step 1: Open the Key Fob

Locate the small notch or seam along the edge of the key fob. Carefully insert the flathead screwdriver or prying tool into the opening and gently separate the two halves of the case.

Work slowly to avoid damaging the plastic housing or internal components.

Step 2: Remove the Old Battery

Once the key fob is open, locate the battery and note its position before removing it. Pay close attention to which side faces up, as the replacement battery must be installed in the same orientation.

Carefully lift out the old battery without damaging the battery contacts.

Step 3: Install the New Battery

Insert the new battery into the compartment using the same orientation as the original. Make sure it sits securely in place and that the battery contacts are properly connected.

Step 4: Reassemble the Key Fob

Align the two halves of the key fob and press them firmly together until they snap into place. Check that the housing is fully closed with no visible gaps.

Step 5: Test the Key Fob

Press each button to verify that the key fob is working correctly.

If it doesn’t function properly:

  • Confirm the battery is installed in the correct direction.
  • Make sure the battery is fully seated.
  • Verify that the key fob case is completely closed.

Helpful Tips

  • Keep a spare replacement battery in your vehicle or at home.
  • Replace the battery as soon as you notice reduced operating range or delayed response.
  • Avoid dropping the key fob or exposing it to water, extreme heat, or excessive moisture.
  • Always use the battery type recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.

Need Professional Help?

If replacing the battery doesn’t restore normal operation, the key fob may require reprogramming or repair. A professional automotive locksmith can diagnose the problem, replace damaged components, or program a replacement key fob to ensure reliable operation.
